WASP FACTS
Wasps - Vespula Vulgaris
Wasps can be regarded as beneficial insects during spring and summer they eat huge quantities of insects and larvae. They become pests towards the end of summer having developed a sweet tooth, they have a passion for sweet drinks, fruit, jam etc. In the spring the queen emerges after over wintering in a sheltered spot in a shed, under tree bark etc. She builds a nest about the size of a golf ball lays a few eggs and rears them herself. Once the first wasps are grown she stays at home laying more eggs and the workers collect food and extend the nest, which can grow thru the summer and can become as large as a football. The sting from a wasp can be painful, treat with antihistamine, a cold compress can reduce redness. Some people may be allergic to the sting, if you experience any shortness of breath dial 999. The wasp problem can be eradicated by injecting insecticide in to the nest using a special lance. If you cannot find the nest but are troubled by wasps a trap strategically placed can be very beneficial.
