MOLE FACTS
Moles - Talpa Europaea
Never seen a mole? That is not surprising as they spend nearly all there life underground, what do they look like... imagine a mouse on steroids. Adults are about 16cm long from nose to tail, tiny eyes and massive forward pointing front feet, their black fur will set in any direction which is handy when moving through the tunnels they live in. Breeding season lasts from Feb until June, normally one litter of 3-4 per year. Young are born blind and naked, they develop rapidly and leave the nest at 5 weeks. The most obvious sign of the presence of moles are the molehills on the lawn. There are a huge number of sure fired techniques to rid your property of moles, smoke, windmills, sonic gizmos, castor oil - generally these methods dont work and some are illegal. There only two ways to control moles effectively, gas or traps. Both methods rely on finding the runs used by the moles. When a run is found a small trowel is used to open up a section large enough to accommodate a trap, it sounds easy but it takes a lot of experience and skill to set a trap correctly. Aluminum Phosphide gas can be used by a trained professional pest controller.
